Lake Bunyonyi is a freshwater lake in Southwest Uganda, nestled between Kabale and Kisoro districts. Its name, meaning “Place of Many Birds” in the local language, highlights its status as a birdwatcher’s paradise. The lake supports over 200 bird species across water and migratory varieties, with Nyombi Swamp offering prime birding spots.

Lake Bunyonyi is also Uganda’s deepest lake, reaching depths of around 900 meters (3,000 feet), and ranks as Africa’s second-deepest. Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trek and Batwa Pygmies Community Walk

Today is the highlight of the tour—mountain gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing by park rangers. You’ll be assigned a gorilla family group and set off into the forest. The trek can take 2-6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, and you’ll have the unique opportunity to observe them for a full hour in their natural habitat.

Upon arrival, check into your lodge and prepare for a canoe ride on the lake. The ride allows you to explore several of the lake’s 29 islands, each with its own unique stories and views.
