Rumanyika-karagwe national park is a beautiful place to visit on safaris in Tanzania.The area was once an 800 square kilometer game reserve however it had fallen to 247 sq. km as of July 2019, yet it is still a stunning place with a lot of promise for photographic tourism.

The Rumanyika-Karagwe National Park is situated in the Kagera region, in northern Tanzania, near to the Lake Victoria area. The Karagwe region is a land of much wonder, holding an unparalleled diversity of fauna, flora and many natural features. The features include the rocks, landscape, and topography that have fostered the development of exceptional cultural tourism, game hunting, historical building exploration, and archaeological sites.

The essential core of the area is quite a deep valley with a slow winding river at its base which breaks up into lakes and swamps.

Tallgrass savanna, wooded areas, and dense bush make up the lower slopes of the valley. A montane forest covers several of the higher slopes of the hills. The Acacia tall grass woodlands are spacious and attractive and are maintained by managed seasonal fires.

The temperatures here range between 130°C to 410° C depending on the area elevation. The rest of the year can have rain, some of it very heavy with up to 1,300 mm in the west areas of the Park. The dry season lasts from July to October.

Getting there – How to get to Rumanyika-karagwe National Park

Rumanyika-karagwe national park can be accessed both by Road and Air.

By Air – One can use a chattered flight from the nearby airports of Chato and Bukoba from which light aircraft can fly to Ibanda-Kyerwa airstrip.

 

By Road – The National Park can be accessed by road from Bukoba Town to Murongo which is about 220 km and from Chato Town to Murongo which is 327 km.

Road access is possible from Uganda and Rwanda through the Kikagati border to Murongo or from Rwanda through Rusumo border via Karagwe to Murongo.
