Lake Bunyonyi is among Uganda’s Fresh water lakes situated in the South West of Uganda, lying between Kabale and Kisoro districts. It derived its name from Bunyonyi – a local word for “A place with many Birds) and it’s no wonder, among Uganda’s Birders’ paradises.
At 900 meters (about 3000ft), Lake Bunyonyi is believed to be Uganda’s deepest lake and second deepest lake in Africa.
It’s best known for it’s various Islands and it hosts over 29 Islands among which include the Punishment Island – where a pregnant unmarried young girl would always be sent in isolation to death as a punishment, Bushara Island, Emarald Island and Bwama Island among others.
Lake Bunyonyi is home to over 200 bird species and a great destination for birders. It’s habituated by both water and migratory birds. Here, the best birding spot being Nyombi Swamp with so many assorted birds.
It’s not just birding that can be enjoyed on a visit to Lake Bunyonyi; you can also engage in swimming, speed Boat rides and Dug Out Canoe rides, Nature walks, and wonderful views of the green and beautifully terraced hills over looking the Lake Bunyonyi Islands.
